How To Take A Bite Out Of Macular Degeneration

By Johanna Leave a Comment

Macular degeneration is a chronic eye disease most often associated with aging.

The macula is the tissue just inside the back of your eyeball. And if you have macular degeneration, it begins to slowly deteriorate thereby affecting your central vision.

While this disease doesn’t result in a complete loss of vision, your lifestyle may go through drastic changes. Such changes might include the inability to drive a car because you have a blind spot in your vision which prevents you from seeing “the whole picture.”

Although aging is the main cause of macular degeneration, people who smoke, drink too much alcohol, are obese or have a family history of the disease are at higher risk for developing macular degeneration.

Other risk factors include gender (women appear to be at greater risk than men) and high blood pressure. [Read more…] about How To Take A Bite Out Of Macular Degeneration

7 Simple Strategies To Age Gracefully

By Johanna Leave a Comment

Regardless what the “anti-aging” crowd is telling us… there is no way to stop it!

Aging is a process that’s as natural as breathing. While we hear talk of anti-aging all the time, I’ve not yet heard anyone talk about anti-breathing. And of course, it wouldn’t make any sense…

Sure, it would be great if we had a choice in the matter of aging. I’d be first in line, along with everyone else, if there was such a thing as turning back the clock (at least most days I would).

But let’s face it, this aging thing is NOT optional. And no matter how much we delude ourselves, it is out of our control.

If we’re fortunate enough, [Read more…] about 7 Simple Strategies To Age Gracefully

How To Protect Your Aging Brain From Memory Loss

By Johanna Leave a Comment

As the Baby Boom generation (my generation) gets older, many want to know what they can do to stay younger longer and what best to do to stay healthy.

Of particular interest to us boomers is how to keep our brain healthy and functioning well. Nobody wants to “lose” their memory, mind and mental function.

Most boomers are motivated to do what it takes to keep their independence, both physically and mentally, as long as they can.

For years, science has maintained physical and mental exercise are the most effective tools we have to prevent age related decline.

And once again, this statement has been confirmed through research.

Two studies outline the importance of physical movement (aka – exercise) and mental exercise as we age.

The Most Effective Way to Protect an Aging Brain

Scientists have a message for anyone who’s worried about memory loss — move, a lot.

Researchers have known for some time that exercise is good for aging brains. The latest studies, though, are adding some finer points to that message: While exercise appears to work best before memory fades, it also benefits people who’ve already gotten dementia. And it seems to help not just with Alzheimer’s disease, but also with vascular dementia, a kind of memory loss that’s caused by “silent” strokes in the brain.”

Another study, recently published on Fox News, reveals how lifestyle changes may hold the key to age related memory loss.

Lifestyle changes may guard aging brain against memory loss

The latest Alzheimer’s research has a clear theme: Change your lifestyle to protect your brain.

It will take several years for scientists to prove whether some experimental drugs could at least delay Alzheimer’s disease, and an aging population is at risk now.

Whatever happens on the drug front, there are generally healthy everyday steps people can take – from better sleep to handling stress to hitting the books – that research suggests just might lower the risk of Alzheimer’s. Go to www.foxnews.com to read the full story.

Amazing, isn’t it?

Turns out, exercise is not only good for a healthy heart and slender waistline, but also for a healthy brain. No matter what, you just can’t go wrong with exercise.

So what are you waiting for? Get moving!

Having Problems Hearing?

By Johanna Leave a Comment

When we think of our health, hearing is not something we often give more than a passing thought to…until we are having difficulty. Or until our partners, family and neighbors complain at our increasingly loud TV’s and stereos.

Think about this…how many times did you go to a concert, only to leave and feel like you could not hear? One of our readers forwarded this information, and I think it’s important enough to share with you. After you have read it, go get your hearing tested. The results may surprise you. Aging Attitude

By Johanna Leave a Comment

Take a look at your attitude about aging. Did anyone ever tell you that aging is an inside job?

It is! Just look around you.

It’s more, much more than just the physical work that keeps a 94 year old woman young.

That same “think” and mindset is what makes the 38 year old woman so old.

When it comes to aging, perhaps the single most important thing you can do for yourself is to learn how to develop and maintain a positive attitude. Develop a “can do attitude” unaffected by dangerous thoughts of “I can’t do that, I’m too old”.

If you think you’re old, you are and you will act that way.

On the other hand, if you don’t think of yourself as being old, [Read more…] about Aging Attitude

Incontinence: The Taboo Subject

By Barbara Phillips, NP Leave a Comment

Nothing slashes a woman’s confidence and self esteem more than this. It’s time to take it out of the closet, discuss it, and find out what you can do.

Urinary incontinence or loss of bladder control. It’s not at all uncommon and no one really wants to talk about it.

Seeing the television commercials is a big step, yet talking about it remains something that might be whispered about behind closed doors. [Read more…] about Incontinence: The Taboo Subject
