Getting Healthy with Weight Loss

By Barbara Phillips, NP 2 Comments

Case in point. Over the last year, I watched a woman lose over 100 lbs – her starting weight was 399 pounds. This is a woman with many physical and mental health problems, and frankly, I didn’t think she would be able to stick with a plan. However, she asked for assistance and I gave it. Need Exercise Inspiration?

By Barbara Phillips, NP 1 Comment

Shawnet Sweets, Cyclist6 months ago, a non-athletic woman (who was not a regular at the gym), decided she would do a bike ride. She is not sure why she wanted to do it. And it was not just any bike ride… it was Aids Lifecycle Ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles (California) in 7 days.

That ride is taking place right now. It began June first. Today, as I write this is day three. The first day, she rode 75 miles, the second she is 91 of the 105 miles, and yesterday, another 75 miles.

I cannot tell you what an inspiration she is to me. Go now and check it out. Support the cause, support the woman making her first major bike ride. Oh, by the way…she’s my cousin.

World AIDS Day

This Friday, December 1st is once again World AIDS Awareness Day. What has this got to do with aging women? Lots! You too are affected – and in growing numbers. You can read more here –> Older Women & HIV.

One company is doing something to donate money. Yes, it’s a pharmaceutical company, but they are donating money none-the-less. Go to Unite to Light and light a candle. The company will donate $1.00 for each candle that is lit. Go on…light a candle.

Good News! Lower Your Risk for Heart Disease

By Barbara Phillips, NP Leave a Comment

Women who say no to carbs, but yes to protein as recommended in the South Beach and Zone diets, do not increase their risk of coronary heart disease, according to researchers here.

And women who consume low-carbohydrate diets that emphasize vegetables rather than animals as the source of protein and fat may be rewarded with a moderate reduction in risk of heart disease.
