How To Take A Bite Out Of Macular Degeneration

By Johanna Leave a Comment

Macular degeneration is a chronic eye disease most often associated with aging.

The macula is the tissue just inside the back of your eyeball. And if you have macular degeneration, it begins to slowly deteriorate thereby affecting your central vision.

While this disease doesn’t result in a complete loss of vision, your lifestyle may go through drastic changes. Such changes might include the inability to drive a car because you have a blind spot in your vision which prevents you from seeing “the whole picture.”

Although aging is the main cause of macular degeneration, people who smoke, drink too much alcohol, are obese or have a family history of the disease are at higher risk for developing macular degeneration.

Other risk factors include gender (women appear to be at greater risk than men) and high blood pressure. [Read more…] about How To Take A Bite Out Of Macular Degeneration

When we think of our health, hearing is not something we often give more than a passing thought to…until we are having difficulty. Or until our partners, family and neighbors complain at our increasingly loud TV’s and stereos.

Hysterectomy: Do I Really Need One?

By Johanna Leave a Comment

With over 600,000 women having hysterectomies in the US every year, they are one of the most commonly performed surgeries.

Did you have a hysterectomy or have you been told you need on? If so, do you know why you should have this surgery and if there are any alternatives to try before having surgical intervention?

At times I have been amazed at how many women had a hysterectomy yet were never told why they had to have the surgery, or why it wasn’t fully explained to them. Turns out, that some of these hysterectomies were not and are not necessary… Actually, 1 in 5 is estimated to be unnecessary surgeries altogether. Cholesterol – The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

By Johanna Leave a Comment

Cholesterol, mainly high cholesterol, has been a debated topic for years (and for good reason).

The CDC, the Centers for Disease Control, reveals some interesting facts about cholesterol.

  • Those who have high cholesterol are 2 times more at risk for heart disease, which, is the leading cause of death in the United States.
  •  71 million American adults, which equates to 33.5% of the population, have a high LDL (bad cholesterol) count.
  • Only 1 out of every 3 adults with high cholesterol manages to get it under control.
  • Less than 50% of those with high LDL counts seek treatment or incorporate the necessary lifestyle changes required to lower their levels.

So what is cholesterol, LDL, HDL and why does it matter to you? [Read more…] about Cholesterol – The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

Heart Disease And Air Pollution – A deadly Link For Women?

By Barbara Phillips, NP Leave a Comment

A study out of West Virginia found that estrogen may protect post menopausal women’s hearts against against the effects of air pollution that causes atherosclerosis (stiff vessels) in the heart. (So far, the study is just in lab animals).  Okay…but let’s back track a bit.

Almost no one likes the fumes of diesel…it makes me dizzy and nauseated. But this study is actually pointing to January 2007 federally funded study of 65,893 women found that the fine grit in polluted air boosts the risk of heart disease in women who have gone through menopause.

That study found that:

Older women are at significantly higher risk for heart problems caused by air pollution than other people.
