Incontinence: The Taboo Subject

By Barbara Phillips, NP Leave a Comment

Nothing slashes a woman’s confidence and self esteem more than this. It’s time to take it out of the closet, discuss it, and find out what you can do.

Urinary incontinence or loss of bladder control. It’s not at all uncommon and no one really wants to talk about it.

Seeing the television commercials is a big step, yet talking about it remains something that might be whispered about behind closed doors. [Read more…] about Incontinence: The Taboo Subject

Health Myths

By Barbara Phillips, NP Leave a Comment

If you are like me, you’ve grown up with all sorts of sayings about your health.

These are saying and “truths” passed down to use by our Mothers and Grandmothers, and meant to keep us healthy, as well as giving us a reason to do as we were told. I specifically recall:

  • Don’t go outside with wet hair or you’ll catch a cold
  • Cracking my knuckles would give me big knuckles
  • Swallow my gum would make my insides stick together

Now, two physicians have come out with a new book, “Don’t Swallow Your Gum! Myths, Half-Truths and Outright Lies About Your Body and Health” to dispel many of the myths we grew up with.

The book focuses on various types of myths about our bodies, about illness and disease, sex and pregnancy and about what we eat and drink.

If you’ve every wondered how often you should poop, if that green mucus was a sign of an infection or if it’s okay to double dip your chips…you’ll find the truths here.

What myths have you grown up with and which ones have you passed on to your children?

For some women, it’s a few drops when they cough, run or lift. For others, it may be a large amount. This is called “stress urinary incontinence”.  Some women get an urge to urinate, but before they can get to the bathroom, their bladders lets loose. (This is called “urge incontinence”, many women know this as “gotta go”. This is the once we all see on TV these days.)  Many women will experience both. [Read more…] about Do you leak?

MammogramIt’s that time of year again when we see pink ribbons everywhere. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is something I talk to women about all year…not just in October.  I’d like to share a few tips that I discuss with women in my practice.

Back Pain, It’s not Inevitable.

By Barbara Phillips, NP 1 Comment

Pain Free Back

This is a complaint I literally hear on a daily basis. While sometimes there is something structurally wrong in the back, often times there is little to offer someone outside of exercise, massage, acupuncture, physical therapy and medication. While most people get better, [Read more…] about Back Pain, It’s not Inevitable.
