What’s A Simple Exercise For Flabby Arms?

By Johanna Leave a Comment

As we women age we get presented with all sorts of “opportunities” … almost daily.

  • opportunities to change our diet, so we’ll lose a few pounds, nourish our aging brain and stay healthier
  • opportunities to tweak our exercise routine because it will help us lose a few pounds, stay healthier and look better
  • opportunities to try creams and lotions to make our skin feel and look better
  • and of course, opportunities to use surgical procedures to help us look and feel younger

Like I said, no shortage of opportunities.Plenty of things to do and try as we get older.

But do we really need all that help, just because we’re getting older?

After all, getting older and aging IS a natural process everyone will be going through at some point.

Well, I guess the answer to that question depends on your point of view and really is a personal matter.

For some women, getting older, grayer and a bit rounder, is not a big deal. They’re ready and prepared for it and certainly don’t lose much sleep over it.

For other women, the exact some events seem to trigger “states of crisis”. They obsess over getting gray, having more wrinkles and accumulating even more fat in certain areas of their body.

And that’s OK. After all, we’re all different and with our own opinions and preferences.

What doesn’t bother you might just really get under my skin and what gets to my best friend might just roll right off me.

But regardless how you feel about this “aging thing”, you may be bothered by some of our seemingly shared trouble spots. These are areas of the body many of us have struggled with and continue to struggle with.

Can you guess what I’m talking at? [Read more…] about What’s A Simple Exercise For Flabby Arms?

Three Types Of “Anti-Aging” Exercises

By Johanna Leave a Comment

Chances are you’ve already experienced some of the changes that happen as you age.

Your hormonal levels diminish and your skin, muscles and bones begin to change. Your skin is not as tight or smooth as it used to be, your muscles are not as strong and the bones begin to weaken.

But a good anti-aging exercise regime can help stimulate hormone production and promote strength and flexibility.

Get Regular Exercise

Studies have shown that a regular exercise program is one of the best things you can do when it comes to battling the effects of aging.

Regular is the operative word here! [Read more…] about Three Types Of “Anti-Aging” Exercises

New Exercise Recommendations

Exercise RecommendationsAll healthy adults ages 18 to 65 years need moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity for at least 30 minutes on five days each week or vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity for at least 20 minutes on three days each week, according to updated physical activity guidelines released last week by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American Heart Association (AHA). The Perfect Health Conscious Quote

By Barbara Phillips, NP Leave a Comment

This one came across my email the other day. It’s so good that I’ve printed it up for all the exam rooms.

Those who think they have not time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness.

~Edward STanley: Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Enough said. Now, get out there and go for a walk.

Avoid Colds And Stay Fit!

By Barbara Phillips, NP Leave a Comment

A recently published study proved something we all know to be true…the more active you are…the healthier you will be. This study was done in Seattle and was actually looking at the effect of exercise on markers of breast cancer risk. But they also noted something else.

They found that women (average age of 61) who particpated in a moderate exercise program (most often walking for 45 minutes 3 days a week) were shown to have less colds that those who did did not particpate. Note that they are talking about a moderate level of exercise, as other studies have shown that excessive, exhaustive exercise can deplete immune function and increase the risk of colds and other infections.

There are so many benefits to exercise…this just adds to the list! Dust of cobwebs off your sneakers and go enjoy a long walk. While your at it, make sure you kick up a few leaves.

Aging? Even You Can Walk Off The Extra Pounds

By Barbara Phillips, NP 3 Comments

BOSTON  As you age, walking can keep the pounds away, according to new research presented at the annual meeting of the Obesity Society, an organization of weight-loss researchers and care providers.

Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh found that overweight middle-aged people who walked briskly for 30 to 60 minutes a day lost 7 pounds in a year and a half, while similar adults who didn’t exercise consistently gained seven pounds in that time.

In the second study, University of North Carolina researchers did an analysis of data on young adults, ages 18 to 30, over a 15-year period and found those who walked four or more hours a week were the least likely to gain weight as they aged.
