Five Habits To Start Eating Healthy

By Johanna Leave a Comment

Of all the things you do for your health, paying attention to eating healthy may provide you with the greatest leverage.

After all, we eat every day; some graze while others eat three meals a day.

Studies show that what we put into our mouths’ plays a bigger part in the presence or absence of disease than most anything else.

If you eat a healthy diet, chances are you’ll enjoy a longer and better quality of life, compared to those who don’t eat healthily.

Unfortunately, over the years many of us have adopted some unhealthy habits, such as emotional eating, mindless eating, or overeating.

At one time or another, most of us have eaten not because we’re hungry, but because we’re tired, frustrated, or we’re feeling down. And that’s ok from time to time.

However, for some, it’s habitual, which can lead to serious health problems. [Read more…] about Five Habits To Start Eating Healthy

The Many Benefits Of Removing Sugar From Your Diet

By Johanna Leave a Comment

Every day, there are new guidelines about what you should and should not eat! Unfortunately, often you’re presented with contradictory information and advise.

Just think back a few years ago.

Back then, the debate was about how much fat should be in our diet. At first, we were told to eat as little fat as possible; low fat was the thing.

But now, we’re told we need some fat in our diet. The message is that fat in the diet is not always bad, depending on what type of fat it is.

We’ve also heard about the damaging effect of consuming too much salt, and we were told to cut back on how much of it we eat. However, the recommendations concerning salt haven’t changed over the years.

Next, we were told to cut back on sugar. Research has shown that there is a link between sugar and obesity, type-2 diabetes and a whole wealth of other health problems.

Just last year the general advice was to drop sugar from your diet altogether. Of course, that’s tough to do, particularly if you have a “sweet tooth.’  [Read more…] about The Many Benefits Of Removing Sugar From Your Diet

How To Cook and Eat Healthy

By Johanna Leave a Comment

It’s been estimated that 75% of healthcare spending in the US goes toward treating preventable chronic illness. Most of those chronic illnesses are related to what and how we eat.

Countless lives could be saved and people could be spared the agony of painful illness and treatments.

As a nation we could save billions of dollars in healthcare spending. This money could go towards research, feeding the hungry, or treating illness beyond our control.

Every day, 3 times a day, you have the opportunity to dramatically improve your health!
You can improve your health by carefully choosing what you eat and how you eat it; because the way you cook your food affects your health.

So if you’re trying to improve your health, one of the first things to look at is how you cook your food. Do you fry most of your food or do you mostly grill, broil or bake? [Read more…] about How To Cook and Eat Healthy

Nutritional Food

By Barbara Phillips, NP Leave a Comment

You know when you look up in a grocery store, they will have signs that direct you to where the coffee, flour and cereal are, right?

Well, in a store about an hour from me, I found the most amazing signs….”Nutritional Food”, “Natural Cereal” and “Nutritional Drink”.  This is a chain supermarket (and I’ll leave them un-named).

While I don’t have to tell you that not all food is healthy, the fact that the grocer is now advertising this is telling.

Truly… it’s time for the consumer to beware. If you are looking for foods that are nutritional, make sure you are in the correct aisles.

Seriously though, learn to read the labels and check them for any products you buy. [Read more…] about Nutritional Food

You Are What You Eat

By Johanna Leave a Comment

No matter what diet you follow or if you don’t “diet” at all, you are what you eat. The statement is true regardless!

The western approach to nutrition is to count calories, carbs, fats and proteins. People eat low fat or fat free, adjust their protein intake, eat low carb, cholesterol free, salt free, use artificial sweeteners, eat high fiber, add fiber … and the list goes on. It seems that a new diet appears almost daily and the different diets are virtually endless. [Read more…] about You Are What You Eat

Healthy Nutrition, Sound Principals

By Barbara Phillips, NP 1 Comment

You’ve heard this all your life…”you are what you eat”. But often, we get confused about what we should be eating. While there is a lot of information available to us about healthy nutrition, it’s good to start with a few sound principals.

As a rule, people of all ages, who wish to be healthy may want to look at the portions of food they eat.

You’ve heard of super sizing no doubt? You don’t have to super size in order to be eating too much…you can do that just by having portions that are a bit larger than they should be.

Most people have “portion distortion”. Get a good reference book on the subject of portions (any diet or nutritional book) and start measuring your portions.

Yes, get out the measuring cup, the tablespoons and the scale. Do this until you relearn the proper amounts of food to eat. Check yourself periodically to make sure you are staying on target. You’ll be amazed with the results. [Read more…] about Healthy Nutrition, Sound Principals
