Yep, I finally got around to watching the movie, Sicko. Eye opening at the very least. As someone who is both a health care provider (and knows all to well how they change their minds and want payments made back – even though you’ve done the work), as well as a health care consumer who is facing larger and larger premiums for less and less coverage…the way Michael Moore portrayed universal health care in other questions has me asking all sorts of questions.

We hear all the time how those in other countries are getting substandard health care. Yet, we rank 37th  in overall health. I can understand that when I see what happens to my patients (as well as our extra workload) as I try to get a procedure or medication covered.  While in the movie, citizens of Canada, France, England and Cuba were able to get all the care they wanted, we continue to hear another view of this.

My Mother listens to talk radio a lot. She told me today about a show that talked about Canadian women coming to the states to get maternity care since they felt they could get better care here. Since our infant mortality rate is higher…I wonder.

In the US, I read about an incident where a woman was ignored and died on the floor of an ER waiting room. Most of us know about the waits in both ER and clinic waiting rooms – it can sometimes be hours. I know what has happened to Mom’s medication bill since Part D went into effect…it has skyrocketed!  Is this how it is in other countries as well?

While I’m there is a bit of truth to all statements, what is really going on in your part of the world?
