Eating disorders rise as baby boomers crawl toward menopause

By Stephanie Schupska University of Georgia
As female baby boomers crawl toward menopause and retirement, eating disorders among this age group have started to rise.

Anorexia Nervosa and Related Eating Disorders, Inc., reports that some speculate the eating disorder increase in this group, born from 1946 until 1964, is because they’ve consistently considered image to be of major importance.

Connie Crawley, a University of Georgia Cooperative Extension expert, agrees. “Women of all ages are very conscious of their bodies and sometimes have a very negative opinion of their bodies,” she said. “Now that the baby boomers are aging, their body changes are really kind of hitting them harder than probably the previous generation. So now there are women who are becoming much more concerned about the normal changes in body fat distribution that come with age.”

Crawley is a UGA Extension nutrition and health specialist and a registered dietitian. She says many people focus on the physical symptoms of an eating disorder, but “the self-esteem issues, the coping skills, dealing with all the changes as one gets older,” are the real issues.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

I see women all the time with fatigue. I see many who have been labeled with all sorts of names because of their ongoing complaints of fatigue, of pain, of an inability to live life like the rest of us. Like fibromyalgia, the “objective” data that clinicians like to see just has not been there…leaving these women and their providers wondering just what was going on and how do you deal with it.

While we are getting closer to the truth, that these are real conditions that we must learn how to manage and treat, we now have “scientific proof” if you will, that genetically there is indeed something going on.

Women Flock to Thai Hospital for Affordable Care

Access to health care is a huge issue for women. I saw a woman yesterday who had not been able to see a provider for a few years because of lack of insurance and funds, despite the fact she has some serious issues that need attention. While the following options are not available to everyone, the article brings up interesting points.

While I don’t personally know women who have gone to Thialand for medical treatment, I do know women (and men) who have gone to Mexico for treatment and/or medicaitons. The question I ask you is, would you go away (assuming you had the means) for treatment? What kind of treatment? And where would you consider going?

Here’s the article:

Women Flock to Thai Hospitable for Affordable Care
With 46 million U.S. citizens living without health insurance–and millions of others underinsured or unable to get adequate care–a growing number of U.S. women are flocking to a Thai hospital for treatments they can’t afford at home.

Women & Soy

For a while now, women have been hearing about the benefits of preventing heart disease, osteoporosis or menopausal symptoms by using soy based foods and nutritional supplements. Now the American Heart Association is giving soy a negative review. This stems from a newer study casting doubt on the effectiveness of soy. While it is true that conflicting evidence does indeed exist, most available evidence is showing that soy proteins can modestly reduce hot flashes in menopausal women and slow bone loss in postmenopausal women.

Once again, what is a woman to do? Frankly, I like soy…yes you heard right. I like it. I use it as tofu as well as use the soy protein to add to smoothies and the like. It’s not a miracle food, but it’s a good source of protein since I eat little meat. I doubt that most women rely entirely on soy for relief of those power surges or for protection both your heart and bones. If you are using soy and feel it helps, then continue to do so.

Breast Cancer and Smoking…

Published by barbara under Cancer, General Health

A study by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (”Hutch”) in Seattle reports a strong association between increased incidence of breast cancer and smoking. Other studies have certainly indicated a correlation. What was unique about this is it looked at older, postmenopausal women.

If you smoke, are exposed to 2nd hand smoke, or have friends that smoke…this is worth a read. Please share.

Long-Term Smoking is Associated With Up to 40 Percent Increased Risk of Breast Cancer
